Augusta, GA (July 16, 2009) - The Augusta GreenJackets erased a 6-0 deficit at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Thursday night as they came from behind to sweep the West Virginia Power with a 9-7 victory in the final game of the series.
The Power scored more runs on Thursday night than they did in the first three games of the series combined. Adenson Chourio's sacrifice fly scored Bobby Spain in the top of the second to plate the first run of the game before Starling Marte belted a two-run double with two outs to give the Power a 3-0 lead. One inning later, they went up 6-0 while scoring three runs on three hits in the third. Spain and Austin McClune belted back-to-back RBI singles before Chourio grounded into a 6-4-3 double play which scored Spain again.
Augusta began their comeback with two runs in the third on run scoring singles from Ehire Adrianza and Andy D'Alessio. The GreenJackets plated two more in the fourth on Vladimir Frias's RBI single and Josh Mazzola's sacrifice fly which plated Wendell Fairley. Augusta took the lead with a five run fifth inning. They scored five times on just three hits. Mike Loberg tied the game with a two-run homer off Wilson Ortiz, and Ortiz hit Matt Klimas with the next pitch. Klimas scored the go ahead run later in the inning on Francisco Peguero's groundout. Adrianza reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Fairley to score the next run before D'Alessio singled in the final run of the inning. West Virginia plated their final run in the seventh on Austin McClune's second RBI single of the night.
Justin Fitzgerald (1-2) kept the Power off the board in four scoreless innings of one hit ball in relief to score the victory. Edwin Quirarte (5) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to snag the save. Wilson Ortiz (2-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on two hits over an inning and two-thirds. Noah Krol retired the final ten batters he faced for the Power and tossed three and a third scoreless innings of relief.
West Virginia fell to 38-51 overall, and 11-8 in the second half after the loss, while the GreenJackets improved to 47-43 overall and 12-9 in the second half after the win. Austin McClune paced the Power with a 3-for-4 performance and knocked in two runs on the night. Starling Marte turned in a two-hit performance and extended his on base streak to 16 games. Tony Sanchez was held hitless, but walked in his first plate appearance, extending his on base streak to 11 games. Jeremy Farrell had the other multi-hit game for the Power, going 2-for-5 and to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and his on base streak to 18.
West Virginia will begin a four game series against the Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium on Friday night. The Power will start right hander Gabriel Alvarado (5-7, 5.21) and the Braves will counter with left hander Dimaster Delgado (1-4, 3.89). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:00 PM.
