CHARLESTON, SC - Hickory catcher Doug Hogan belted his third home run in as many nights as the Hickory Crawdads nipped the Charleston RiverDogs, 8-2, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 4,923 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The game was cancelled with two outs in the top of the eighth inning as thunderstorms drenched the Lowcountry.

Hogan destroyed a 0-1 offering by RiverDogs reliever Luke Prihoda for his 13th home run, a solo blast over the left field wall. Hogan's blast marked the third consecutive game the former Clemson standout homered against the RiverDogs.

With the victory, the Crawdads take the series, 3-games-to-1, and improve their second half record to 13-7 (46-43 overall) while the RiverDogs, who have dropped nine of their last 11 games, fall to 8-13 (47-44).

The Crawdads ignited to a 1-0 advantage in the second when Matt West cracked a leadoff double, advanced to second on a fielding error by RiverDogs pitcher Brett Marshall and scored when Eric Fry hit into a double play.

Charleston knotted the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Corban Joseph reached on a bloop single and dashed to second on a bunt single by Melky Mesa. Following a flyout that advanced Joseph to third, Mitch Abeita knocked home Joseph on a RBI ground out.

Hickory's bats ignited for four runs in the fifth as the Crawdads reclaimed a 5-1 advantage when Fry drew a walk and moved to second on Michael Hollander's sacrifice bunt. Miguel Alfonzo hammered a RBI double to left that brought home Fry. Andres James added a single that moved Alfonzo to third and David Paisano laced a RBI double off the left field wall that plated Alfonzo as James scampered into third. Jared Bolden tattooed a double off the center field wall for a two-run double.

The Crawdads added to their lead in the sixth on a RBI single by Alfonzo and a RBI sacrifice bunt by Hollander to make the score 7-1.

Charleston tacked on a run in the seventh to make the score 7-2 when Neall French, who reached on walk and scooted to third on a groundout and fielding error, scored on Jose Pirela's groundout.

Marshall, whose record drops to 3-6, went five full innings and allowed five runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four.

Hickory starter Martin Perez evened his record to 5-5 as he also pitched five complete frames and allowed one earned run on three hits while walking one and striking out four. He has allowed only two earned runs during the month of July that encompassed three starts and 15 innings.

Crawdads' relievers Wilfredo Boscan and Mark Hamburger finished the last two frames and combined to allow one run on a hit while walking one and striking out one.

Alfonzo paced Hickory's 11-hit attack with three while Paisano added a pair.

Charleston, which was held to four hits for the second consecutive night, did not have a player with more than one.

The RiverDogs begin the second half of this eight-game homestand as the Kannapolis Intimidators, an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, begin a four-game set. With first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Friday, Charleston turns to right-hander Andrew Brackman (1-9, 5.97 ERA) while Kannapolis counters with righty Stephen Sauer (5-3, 2.91 ERA).
