Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Bowling Green, KY (August 25, 2009) - The West Virginia Power used good pitching and great defense at Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday night as they opened up the four game set with a 3-1 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods to secure their 12th consecutive road victory.
Tony Sanchez ripped a two-out single in the top of the first inning, and moved to third shortly thereafter on Calvin Anderson's bloop base hit to center field. With runners at the corners and two down, Kyle Morgan hit a groundball to Bowling Green shortstop Tim Beckham who booted the ball, and then threw the ball into the first row of seats behind the first base dugout. The errors allowed Sanchez to score the go ahead run.
Bowling Green had two chances to tie the game over the next two innings. Beckham was a third base with one out when Kyeong Kang hit a fly ball to deep right field. Austin McClune made the catch and threw out Beckham at the plate to end the inning. In the bottom of the second, Isaias Velasquez was on third with one down when Robi Estrada belted a fly ball to medium deep left field. Quincy Latimore made the catch, and gunned down Velasquez at the dish to preserve the 1-0 lead. The Power added to their advantage in the third inning on Bobby Spain's two out RBI single. The Hot Rods scored their lone run in the sixth inning on Kang's run scoring double. Morgan struck again for the Power in the eighth with a tape measure shot that soared over the wall in right field. It was his seventh of the season.
Brett Lorin (1-1) tossed five scoreless innings, allowed just five hits and struck out two in a winning effort. Casey Erickson (5) surrendered just a run on five hits over four innings of relief and snagged the save. Chris Andujar (10-4) struck out six over five and a third but was tagged for a pair of runs on five hits and suffered the loss.
West Virginia improved to 59-65 overall, and 32-22 in the second half after the victory, while the Hot Rods fell to 61-64 overall and 27-28 in the second half after the loss. Calvin Anderson, Robbie Grossman and Bobby Spain paced the Power with two hits a piece. Anderson's two hits extended his hitting streak to nine games. West Virginia was out hit 10-9 in the contest, marking the second time in their last three games that they've won, despite being out hit.
West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark on Wednesday night. The Power will start right hander Hunter Strickland (3-1, 2.57) and the Hot Rods will counter with right hander Joe Cruz (4-8, 4.16). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:35 PM.
