Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston's Jose Pirela drilled a run-scoring triple in the 12th inning to hand the RiverDogs an unlikely come-from-behind win, 10-9, in South Atlantic League action Tuesday night in front of 2,598 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Down 9-1, the RiverDogs rallied for four runs in the fifth and seventh innings and got spectacular relief pitching for the largest come-from-behind victory in the last three years. With the victory, the RiverDogs improve to 25-30 in the season's second (64-61 overall) while the Braves slip to 26-29 in the second half (61-64).
Luke Prihoda (2-0) picked up the victory in relief, as the bullpen pitched 7.2 innings and allowed no runs on only four hits. Collectively, they fanned six Braves while walking only one.
Jeff Farnham, who finished the game with a 4-for-5 performance with one RBI and two runs scored - including the game-winning run - led off the 12th inning with a walk. Going on the pitch, Pirela lined a McMillan (1-2) pitch over center fielder Calvin Culver's head to plate Farnham.
Rome started early with three runs in the first against Charleston starter Alan Horne. After a single, walk and hit by pitch began the game, Shayne Moody bolted for the plate on a wild pitch, Luis Sumoza added an RBI groundout and Samuel Sime smashed an RBI double to deep left for the quick 3-0 advantage.
The RiverDogs responded immediately in the bottom half on Melky Mesa' RBI double off starter Dimaster Delgado, which scored Abraham Almonte, who singled with one out to increase his hitting streak to 16 games.
In the second inning, Rome's Joel Campusano increased the margin to 4-1 on an one-out RBI groundout to plate Calvin Culver.
The Braves' offense continued in the third as two more runs scored. Derek Wiley drew a bases-loaded walk and Culver recorded a sacrifice fly.
Rome pushed another run across in the fourth to make the score 7-1 on a two-out, solo home run over the right field fence by Sumoza, his fourth of the season.
Two more tallies crossed the dish in the fifth on an RBI double by Kuyaunnis Miles, while the second run scored on a passed ball for a 9-1 advantage.
Charleston started on the comeback trail in the fifth scoring four times on five hits against Delgado to cut it to 9-5. Highlighting the frame was an RBI double by Farnham, an RBI single by Almonte and a 2-run double by Corban Joseph.
Charleston knotted the score at 9-9 in the seventh on a three-run blast by Neall French over the left field wall that came on a 3-2 count.
Charleston starter Horne, in making his Riley Park debut, went 4.1 frames and permitted nine runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out two while throwing two wild pitches and hitting two.
Conversely, Delgado, who improved his mark to 5-6, went 5.1 frames and surrendered five earned runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking none.
Charleston registered 19 base hits, which tied for the second-highest total this season, with Farnham's and Joseph's four knocks, while Almonte and French each recorded three hits. Rome was led by Sime's three hits and two each from Sumoza, Culver and Miles.
The eight-run comeback was the largest of the 2009 season bettering the six-run comeback Charleston notched this past Sunday in Augusta.
Game 2 of this three-game block is slated for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., with Charleston tossing right-hander Dan Kapala (6-1, 2.99 ERA) and Rome countering with righty Zeke Spruill (8-5, 3.06 ERA).
