Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Augusta outfielder James Simmons drove in the game-winning run in the top of the 10th with a single back through the middle to lead the GreenJackets to a, 4-3, win over the Sand Gnats Tuesday night at Grayson Stadium. Chris Wilson (4-5) earned the win while closer Rhiner Cruz (3-3) suffers the loss.
Ehire Adrianza drew a four-pitch walk from Cruz to start the 10th and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of catcher Eliezer Zambrano, his second of the game. After a wild pitch moved him to third, Simmons connected with a Cruz pitch and placed it back up the middle to score Adrianza easily from third.
In the bottom half, the Gnats got a leadoff single from Nick Giarraputo, who finished the game 2-for-5. Playing for the tie, Joey August was asked to bunt Giarraputo over to second base which he did successfully. Unfortunately for the Gnats, Giarraputo would move no further as Wilson retired Luis Alen and Evan LeBlanc to end the game.
Augusta scored first in the game with an unearned run off the starter Jeurys Familia. Savannah was able to benefit from an Augusta error in the first to score three runs to take a lead it would hold until the fifth. Four consecutive hits by the GreenJackets plated two runs to tie the game.
Familia finished five frames and permitted three runs (two earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts. GreenJackets' starter Ari Ronick allowed three unearned runs and struck out eight over six innings of duty.
Giarraputo has now hit safely in all seven games since rejoining Savannah. The California native has also driven in seven runs this season.
The series continues on a Website Wednesday at Grayson Stadium. It's also Humana Night and Baseball Bingo Night at Grayson Stadium. For tickets and more information, log on to www.sandgnats.com or call 912.351.9150.
