Lexington Legends News Release
A two-run eighth-inning rally carried the Lexington Legends past the Hickory Crawdads 3-2 Tuesday night in the opening game of the Legends final homestand of the season.
Hickory had taken a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom half, Albert Cartwright led off with a walk. Eric Suttle hit a ground ball to shortstop Leury Garcia, whose throw to second was too late to get Cartwright, leaving runners at first and second. Brandon Wikoff flied out and Steve Brown struck out, but Cartwright stole third during Brown's at-bat.
Federico Hernandez then lined a single to left-center field, scoring Cartwright to tie the game at 1-1. Suttle, who was running on the pitch, advanced to third. Michael Diaz' bouncer toward right field was knocked down by second baseman Andres James, but he had no play, and Suttle scored the go-ahead run.
Hickory took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a single by Aja Barto and a triple to right center field by Mike Hollander.
The Legends tied it in the bottom of the third. Singles by Russ Dixon and Cartwright put runners at first and third. Suttle struck out, but with Wikoff at the plate, pitcher Wilfredo Boscan committed a balk, which allowed Dixon to score the tying run.
Hickory went back on top in the eighth when Jared Bolden scored from second base as the Legends attempted to turn a second-to-shortstop-to first double play. The throw to first was late, and Bolden beat the throw home to put Hickory up 2-1.
Henry Villar, who pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Lexington, picked up the win to improve his record to 3-4. Corey Ragsdale (1-1), who entered the game in the eighth for Hickory, was the losing pitcher.
Former Crawdad Matt Nevarez, acquired by the Houston organization August 18 in the trade that sent catcher Ivan Rodriguez from Houston to Texas, pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save as a Legend and 10th of the year.
The two teams meet again Wednesday night at Applebee's Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
