Power Play Pushes Warriors Past Broncos

The Moose Jaw Warriors scored four power-play goals in a 5-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos Saturday at the Subway WHL Hub in Regina.

Throughout the first period, the Warriors created turnovers inside the neutral zone which allowed them to attack the Broncos net.

Five minutes into the game, Broncos forward Josh Davies was issued a major and game misconduct for a knee-on-knee hit on Cole Jordan.

Three minutes into the man-advantage, Ryder Korczak had the puck behind the Broncos net and was able to make a tape-to-tape pass to Eric Alarie at the bottom of the left circle where he scored his fourth of the season.

Still, on the power play at 9:52, Eric Alarie brought the puck down the Broncos left boards.  He found Tate Popple streaking to the net through the middle of the ice, the 20-year-old was able to get a shot on the net that was stopped by goalie Isaac Poulter.

However, the rebound bounced off a Broncos defenceman and over the goal line, Popple was credited with his fourth goal which gave Moose Jaw a 2-0 lead.

Swift Current moved up the ice with speed to start the second period.  At 3:24, the Broncos rushed up the ice and eventually set up Cohner Saleski on the right-wing where he put a shot between the pads of Boston Bilous.

Moose Jaw picked up the pace after the Broncos goal which led to a consistent presence inside the Swift Current zone.

At 7:14, Calder Anderson, Cade Hayes, and Jagger Firkus grinded the Broncos along their boards.  Hayes was able to get control of the puck and come off the left wall and skated the puck to the bottom of the circle.

Hayes then found a seam to make a cross-ice pass to Cory King inside the right circle where he scored his first of the Hub to put Moose Jaw back up by two.

In the third period, the Warriors' power play put the game away.

Swift Current took three straight penalties starting at 10:23 which led to back-to-back 5-on-3 power-play goals for Captain Daemon Hunt.

Hunt finished with two goals and three points, Eric Alarie and Tate Popple had a goal and two points each, Ryder Korczak picked up three assists, and Boston Bilous had an assist and 16 saves.

Moose Jaw finished 4-for-8 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.

Moose Jaw is right back to work on Sunday when they take on the Saskatoon Blades for the first time at the Subway WHL Hub.
