Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The West Virginia Power lost 9-7 to the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday. The Suns broke a seven-all tie in the fourth and saw their bullpen shut down the Power bats for the remainder of the game.

Hagerstown took an early lead for the second straight night. The Suns scored twice in the top of the first on a single, a triple, and a ground out. West Virginia, though, answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first. Alen Hanson singled and stole second. Hanson then stole third and scored as Suns pitcher Taylor Hill's throw to third was errant and rolled down the left field line. One out later, Gregory Polanco doubled, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on a ground out for a 2-2 tie.

The Power took its' only lead of the game in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs on four hits and one Suns error. Francisco Diaz and Polanco had run scoring singles to key the inning and help build a 6-2 lead.

The Suns were quick to respond with a five-run third, knocking West Virginia starter Zack Von Rosenberg out of the game after four hits, two walks, and an error. Zac Fuesser relieved Von Rosenberg with two outs and the bases loaded, walked in a run, and then induced a ground out to end the inning with the Power trailing 7-6.

West Virginia evened the score in the bottom of the third on another run-scoring single by Diaz.

Matt Skole led off the fourth inning with a solo home run off Fuesser to push Hagerstown back in front. The Suns would take a 9-7 lead with a double and a two-out single in the fifth that capped the scoring.

Hill was replaced by Christian Meza in the third. Meza (7-1) walked the first batter he faced before retiring ten in a row. Greg Holt pitched the final three innings and retired all nine batters he faced for his third save of the season. Fuesser (3-6) took the loss as the Suns and Power split the four-game series with two wins apiece.

West Virginia will continue this eight game homestand with a four game set against the Lakewood BlueClaws starting on Friday evening at 7:05 pm. Nick Kingham will pitch for the Power against the BlueClaws Gabriel Arias at Appalachian Power Park.
