Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - The Greensboro Grasshoppers used a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-2 Thursday night to earn a split of the teams' four-game series at Historic Grayson Stadium. Rain delayed the start of the game by one hour and twenty minutes.

The Gnats (18-23/59-49) scored the game's first run in the third inning thanks to singles from RF Charley Thurber, SS Matt Reynolds and then an RBI single into centerfield from CF Gilbert Gomez.

Starter Jimmy Fuller made the 1-0 lead hold up until the fifth inning, when the Grasshoppers scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. With two outs and the bases empty, six straight "˜Hoppers reached base safely. LF Ryan Goetz brought home the first Greensboro run with a single over the second base bag. Fuller then walked consecutive batters to force in the go-ahead run. Reliever Randy Fontanez entered with the bases full. "˜Hoppers 3B Josh Adams greeted Fontanez by lining a single into rightfield for a 4-1 Greensboro advantage. All four runs in the inning were charged to Fuller, who took the loss to fall to 3-4.

Meanwhile, the Gnats had trouble solving RHP Jose Urena, who finished six innings and earned the win. Urena fanned five and walked one. Both teams scored single runs in the sixth to complete the game's scoring.

The Gnats begin a four-game series in Asheville on Friday night. After an off-day Tuesday, the team opens a seven-game homestand against the Greenville Drive on August 8, with Webkinz Wednesday. The first 200 kids aged 12 years old and younger through the gates at Historic Grayson Stadium will receive a great Webkinz toy!
