SUNDAY: West Virginia beat Hagerstown 4-3 in ten innings on an Elevys Gonzalez walk-off home run. The Suns head a lead of 3-1 after six inning on the strength of two solo home runs and a long double, but the Power tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a triple by Andy Vasquez that plated a pair. Each team had an opportunity to score over the final two innings of regulation, but could not capitalize. Gonzalez hit the first pitch of the home half of the tenth inning off the top of the right-center wall for the win.
MR. WALK-OFF: Elevys Gonzalez has five home runs this season, two of which have given the Power a walk-off victory. Gonzalez hit a three run walk-off winner on August 20 against Asheville's Sheng-An Quo in the bottom of the ninth, and added a solo winner on Sunday. Four of Gonzalez's five home runs this season have happened at Appalachian Power Park.
SOLID SEASONS REWARDED: Gabriel Alvarado was promoted to Bradenton earlier today, joining Phillip Irwin, who was elevated a level on Sunday. Alvarado finished his 2010 SAL season with a 3-5 record and a 4.21 ERA over 40 appearances, while Irwin finished his South Atlantic League season 6-3 with a staff best 3.35 ERA in 23 appearances. Irwin's 3.35 earned run average ranks sixth in the league, and the right-hander struck 111 while only walking 20.
ENNIS RETURNS: The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Justin Ennis back to the Power roster when they sent Phillip Irwin to Bradenton. Ennis was drafted in the 33rd round of the 2010 draft and is the only player drafted this year to appear in a game for West Virginia. The southpaw totaled 19 games for State College during two stints in the NYPL, going 2-2 with a 5.53 ERA. In the SAL this year, Ennis is 0-1 with a 10.13 earned run average.
END OF THE ROAD: West Virginia's recently completed road trip was their final excursion for the 2010 season. The Power went 31-39 away from Charleston this season, hit .244 as a club, and held a staff ERA of 4.63. David Rubinstein led the club with a .317 road average, while Aaron Baker hit 12 of his 18 total home runs on the road. Phillip Irwin excelled on the road, going 3-0 with a 2.05 earned run average, while Kyle McPherson had a staff-best 57 strikeouts away from Appalachian Power Park.
ONE TOO MANY: The Power loss on Friday night has guaranteed that the club cannot finish the second half or the entire 2010 home schedule with a winning record. The club is now 31-35 in the second half and has an identical home record for the year with three games remaining.
WALK THIS WAY: Evan Chambers leads the South Atlantic League with 91 walks and still ranks in the top ten across all of Minor League Baseball despite not having played between August 17 and August 31.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is 13-16 in daytime contests this season with two remaining afternoon starts left. The Power, conversely, are 51-58 at night... The Power did not place any players on the South Atlantic League's end-of-season All-Star squad.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 8-1 to Washington at PNC Park... Indianapolis beat Louisville 5-3... Altoona beat Reading 3-2... Bradenton lost to Charlotte 4-1... State College beat Williamsport at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park by a 6-2 final.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
