Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Hagerstown Suns 7-3 on Monday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park to close out the 2010 season. West Virginia tagged three Suns pitchers for 16 hits, including two home runs, to conclude the season with a 65-74 record.
Both starting pitchers fare well as the game began, but neither factored in the decision. Brett Lorin pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out a pair. Sammy Solis, a second round draft choice by Washington this season, struck out two in two innings during his second Hagerstown start.
The Power took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Suns' reliever Paul Applebee. With out out, Kyle Morgan walked and Rogelio Noris drove the first pitch he saw over the left field wall. It was the 15th home run of the season for Noris, second on the club only to Aaron Baker, who finished the season with 18. Jario Marquez later scored on a base hit by David Rubinstein to build the advantage.
Hagerstown plated a run in the top of the sixth, but West Virginia countered with two in the home half of the inning on single by Jarek Cunningham and Evan Chambers for a 5-1 lead behind reliever Justin Ennis.
Each team scored twice in the eighth. Hagerstown cut the deficit to 5-3 when Rick Hague hit a two-run home run off Marc Baca in the top of the inning, but Elevys Gonzalez answered with a two-run shot of his own in the bottom half. Gonzalez, who hit a walk-off home run on Sunday in the tenth inning, finished the season with five home runs.
Baca pitched a perfect ninth to end the game, striking out Randolph Oduber to conclude the season.
Ennis (1-1) gained the win in his third South Atlantic League appearance of the year, while Applebee (6-6) took the loss after surrendering five runs on 11 hits over four innings. Every Power batter had at least one hit, and five reached on two hits or more, paced by three hit games from Chambers and Gonzalez.
West Virginia finished the 2010 season tied for fourth in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League, 19 games behind Lakewood. The Power went 34-35 in the second half and could finish as high as third in the division, pending the outcomes of the remaining league schedule.
West Virginia opens the 2011 season at Appalachian Power Park on April 7 against the Savannah Sand Gants.
