FRIDAY: West Virginia saw its season-best five game winning streak stopped with a 5-1 loss to Lakewood. The BlueClaws tallied three runs in the first against Power starter Quinton Miller, which turned out to be enough. West Virginia scored its lone run with two outs in the ninth inning when Aaron Baker singled in David Rubinstein. Miller took the loss for the Power, which had not lost since July 30 at Lakewood.
ERICKSON V CLAWS: Jason Erickson will make his third start of the season against Lakewood in tonight's game. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 3.38 earned run average in two previous starts against Lakewood this year, having allowed four runs on eights hits during a May 21 loss at FirstEnergy Park in New Jersey and taking a no decision at home, despite allowing no runs on three hits over five innings on June 11.
BROOMS NEEDED: West Virginia completed its first series sweep of the season by capturing both games of Thursday's doubleheader. The Power had not swept a four game series since last August at Lexington, part of a ten game winning streak. The last four-game sweep at home was during May of the 2009 season when West Virginia beat Delmarva in four straight, including both halves of a doubleheader.
AND DUSTPANS: Not only did West Virginia sweep its first series of the season, but they also swept their first doubleheader of the year. The Power had split each doubleheader they played so far, always winning the first and falling in the nightcap. The last time West Virginia swept a doubleheader was 5/17/09 at home against Delmarva.
A SEASON FIRST: Power batters completed their first game of the season without any strikeouts on this past Tuesday. West Virginia hitters went 15 for 36, walked 5 times, hit three sacrifice flies, and stole three bases in three chances. 10 of the remaining 21 outs were ground balls, while 10 came on fly balls. The first out of the seventh inning was recorded when a Power player tried to advance from first to third on a base hit but was gunned down.
JUST UNDER IN JULY: The Power finished July with a 14-15 record, roughly in the middle of the SAL pack for the month. Charleston and Lakewood held the league's best record at 18-12, while Hagerstown had the lowest winning percentage with a 10-18 mark. West Virginia hit .259 during the month, their best average in any month this season and their 23 home runs were second only to their June totals. The Power staff ERA was 4.67; slightly more than on run higher than May's season best 3.65 earned run average, but still slightly over a full run less than June's 5.65 ERA.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia hitters rank third in the SAL in walks, having combined for 363 this season, three behind league leader Lexington... Jose Hernandez had five hits in seven at bats in Thursday's doubleheader, including his team-best sixth three-hit game in the early contest.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 6-3 at PNC Park against Colorado... Indianapolis split a doubleheader at Durham, losing 1-0 in game one and winning 4-1 in the nightcap... Altoona's winning streak was stopped at five with a 6-1 loss at Harrisburg... Bradenton beat Brevard County 2-0. Quincy Latimore drove in both runs on a sixth inning homer... State College beat Staten Island 4-2.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
