Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
In what was the most wild game of the season, the Kannapolis Intimidators, belt out 16 hits and 14 runs, including a two-home run and six RBI day for Brady Shoemaker in a 14-9 win against the Hagerstown Suns in game one of a five game series at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Saturday night. The win is the Intimidators fourth straight.
The Intimidators (19-21) shot out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-double by Tyler Saladino, scoring Daniel Wagner and made it 2-0 in the second with Shoemaker's first home run, a solo shot to center off starter Evan Bronson.
Ryan Buch allowed an unearned run in the top of the third, and the Intimidators got it back as Nick Ciolli plated Kyle Colligan with a sacrifice fly after Colligan singled, stole a base and moved over on a fielder's choice. However, in the fourth inning the game changed.
Buch struggled in the fourth as he allowed back-to-back walks and a single by Stephen King loaded the bases with no one down. Sandy Leon hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 game and an Eury Perez bunt single tied the game at three. Rick Hague gave the Suns (15-26) the lead at 4-3 with an RBI-single and Adrian Sanchez extended the lead with a ground out that scored a run. Buch's day would end through four, allowing four hits and five runs, four earned.
Down by two in the bottom of the fifth, Saladino and Colligan singled to start the inning and Ian Gac walked to load the bases. Ciolli grabbed his second RBI of the game with a fielder's choice and Bronson (1-2) was lifted from the game. The Suns summoned righty Ben Graham, and on the first pitch he tossed, Shoemaker hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left that gave the Intimidators a 7-5 lead.
In the sixth off Graham, Jake Oester had one of his three hits, his second double of the game, and Saladino blasted his first home run of the year, a two run shot that extended the Intimidators lead out to 9-6. Zach Piccola (2-4) pitched the fifth and sixth and was the pitcher of record as he entered the game trailing and exited with the lead.
Up 9-6, former first round pick Josh Smoker was brought on in the seventh inning, and on the second pitch he threw, Ciolli hit his tenth home run of the season, and grabbed his third RBI of the game.
Up 10-6 going into the eighth, the Intimidators brought in 2010 second round selection Jake Petricka after 1.1 scoreless from Matt Wickswat. Petricka had a runner reach on an error and allowed two singles and a runner to reach on a catcher's interference. One run was in on Petricka as Taylor Thompson entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs and Thompson walked two runs home before getting Leon to pop out with the tying run on third in a 10-9 game. None of the runs in the inning were earned to Petricka or Thompson.
Only up one going into the bottom of the eighth and looking for insurance runs, Shane Erb entered the game and started the inning with a strikeout of Saladino. With one down, Colligan, Gac and Ciolli all walked before Shoemaker hit a two-run double, his fifth and sixth RBI on the night to give the Intimidators some room to breathe at 12-9. Jordan Cheatham then singled in another run and Miguel Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to score the Intimidators 14th run of the game, tying a season high. Armed with a five-run lead, Thompson completed the save, his third, in the ninth.
In addition to Ciolli's three and Shoemaker's six RBI, Saladino also had three. As the Intimidators made up for lost time and the two straight days of rain postponements. The two teams will meet twice on Sunday beginning at 2:05 pm for two 7-inning games as Cameron Bayne and Matt Hopps will take on Paul Demny and Graham Hicks. The Intimidators will go in search of their first five-game winning streak of the season.
