BONUS BASEBALL: West Virginia dropped the series opener to Hickory, falling 6-5 in ten innings. The Power held a 5-2 lead after eight innings, built up on two sac flies, an inside the park home run, and two doubles. The Crawdads rallied for three runs against Duke Welker in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Hickory took its first lead in the tenth by scoring a run on two hits against Gabriel Alvarado.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Friday night's loss was the first this season by the Power when scoring five or more runs in a game this season. The club was 16-0 prior to Friday when scoring five or more, while going 6-25 when scoring four or less. The loss also represented the first time that West Virginia lost a game when leading after six innings (15-1), seven (18-1), and eight (17-1).
WALK THIS WAY: Evan Chambers leads the SAL with 37 walks, three more than Delmarva's Brian Conley. Chambers is also among the leaders across all of Minor League Baseball. The Lakeland, Florida native is alone in fourth place, trailing leaders Conner Crumbliss and Niko Vasquez by eight free passes.
LEADING BASEBALL: West Virginia has hit into 16 double plays this season, the fewest amount of any team in full-season, affiliated baseball. In the Midwest League, Clinton has hit into 18, while International League lowest total is Norfolk's 20. The lowest tally among National League teams is 18 by the San Diego Padres, while the lowest mark in the American League is 25 by Toronto.
FSL ALL-STARS: Seven members of the Bradenton Marauders were selected for the Florida State League's All-Star game, including four players that saw time for West Virginia last year. Tony Sanchez, Quincy Latimore, Jeremy Farrell, and Noah Krol player for the Power last year and were selected for the mid-season FSL classic. The others selected from Bradenton's roster were infielder Brock Holt, pitcher Jeff Locke, and pitcher Nathan Adcock. The All-Star game will be played on June 12 at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida.
GIDDY-UP: Kyle McPherson is tied for the seventh among all minor league pitchers with 39 strikeouts this month. The right-hander has retired totals of six, nine, five, ten, and nine during his five May starts, and is slated to make one more outing on Sunday. McPherson trails minor league leader Charles Furbush of Lakewood (51) by 12 strikeouts.
POWER POINTS: The Power were shutout for the fifth time this season on Sunday, matching their 2009 season-long tally... Wednesday's crowd of 4,601 was the largest of the season, surpassing Tuesday's previous high. The Power drew 8,636 during their two Grand Slam School Days this week... West Virginia is 5-1 in games played on Saturday this season... The Power are now 2-2 in charity jersey this season after Friday's loss in the ASPEN-inspired tops.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 7-3 at Atlanta... Indianapolis' game at Charlotte was suspended in the fifth inning due to rain... Altoona beat Reading 7-1... Bradenton beat Tampa 8-1. Tony Sanchez had three hits for the Marauders.
