Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
In a back-and-forth affair the Kannapolis Intimidators won game one of a four game series with the affiliates of the New York Yankees, the Charleston RiverDogs by the score of 5-4. Joe Serafin achieved his fifth win of the season in his third attempt.
The Intimidators (25-24) got on the board in the first inning as Daniel Wagner walked to lead off the ball game, he was advanced on a ground ball and scored on a single by Ian Gac to take a 1-0 lead. Then the game went on a sea-saw.
Against Serafin who went seven innings, allowing four runs three earned while not walking a single batter and striking out six, the RiverDogs (21-28) got runs in back to back innings in the third, after a lead-off double scored on a sacrifice fly and back to back singles earned a 2-1 lead for the 'Dogs in the fourth.
However the Intimidators wouldn't be denied. In the bottom of that inning, the fourth, Gac singled to lead off the inning followed by a walk by Nick Ciolli. After a strike out, Brady Shoemaker grounded to third but the ball was thrown away at first and a run scored and runners advanced. With runners on first and third, Kevin Dubler hit a chopper to second, but a late throw home scored Ciolli to take a one run lead.
After the RiverDogs scored once more in the fifth and again in the sixth, the Intimidators, down a run again, would battle back to take the lead. After a strikeout, Dubler reached on walk and Jake Oester was hit by a pitch. Wagner then tied the game with an RBI-ground out and Jesus Villegas hit what would stand up to being the game-winning single with two out in the sixth, scoring Oester to take a 5-4 lead.
Newly signed pitcher Angel Garcia pitched a clean eighth inning and Brandon Kloess worked a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.
Gabriel Tatis took the loss and falls to 0-2 for the RiverDogs after Jose Ramirez worked five innings allowing three runs, one earned. Serafin (5-2) is the second Intimidators pitcher to get to five wins.
The Intimidators and RiverDogs will play two games Sunday, as they will play the first of a doubleheader at 3:05 pm and the second seven-inning game thirty minutes after. The Intimidators will send Cameron Bayne and Andre Rienzo to the hill.
