Kannapolis Takes Advantage of Charleston Errors En Route to 5-4 Win

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Kannapolis scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning after a one-out Charleston error, as the Intimidators defeated the RiverDogs, 5-4, in South Atlantic League action at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium Saturday night.

With the victory, the Intimidators are now 25-24, while Charleston breaks a two-game win streak in falling to 21-28.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth and a 4-3 Charleston lead, Gabriel Tatis (0-2) induced a foul pop up off the bat of Kevin Dubler, but the ball was dropped in foul territory allowing the at-bat to continue.

Dubler walked on the next pitch, and then Tatis hit Jake Oester. A wild pitch with Dan Wagner at the plate moved runners to second and third, and then Wagner tied the game at 4-4 with a RBI groundout. Jesus Villegas' two-out RBI single to left turned out to be the game-winner.

Angel Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth, and Brandon Kloess a flawless ninth to earn his fourth save of the year.

Ian Gac lined a two-out RBI single in the first against Jose Ramirez to give the Intimidators a 1-0 lead.

Kelvin Castro doubled against Joe Serafin to leadoff the third, moved to third base on a groundout, and then scored on Jimmy Paredes' sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to tie the game at 1-1.

Zoilo Almonte and Luke Murton began the fourth with consecutive singles, and then Almonte bolted home for a 2-1 advantage on Kyle Higashioka's RBI groundout.

Kannapolis put up two runs in the bottom half to retake a 3-2 lead. Gac singled, moved to second on a walk to Nick Ciolli and scored on a Charleston error. Ciolli then came plateward on Dubler's RBI fielder's choice.

Charleston tied the affair at 3-3 in the fifth, when Paredes reached on an error that allowed Ray Kruml to score after he stole second base.

Murton bounced a RBI single to centerfield in the sixth to give the RiverDogs the lead back at 4-3.

Serafin (5-2) won for the third time in his last six starts, allowing four runs over 7.0 innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Ramirez took a no-decision for Charleston, surrendering three runs - one earned - on three hits in 5.0 innings while walking three and sinking six.

Murton was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI for the RiverDogs, while Castro and Almonte had two hits each.

Sunday's slate features a doubleheader with two seven-inning games beginning at 3:05 p.m. In game one, Charleston plans to pitch right-hander Kelvin Perez (2-2, 2.50 ERA), while Kannapolis fires back with right-hander Cameron Bayne (2-6, 4.62 ERA). Game two has the RiverDogs sending Mike Solbach (0-1, 3.21 ERA) to the mound for his first start of year, and the Intimidators counter with right-hander Andre Rienzo (0-0, 11.12 ERA).
