Power Falls to Charleston in Series Opener

(Charleston, SC- April 23, 2013)- The West Virginia Power fell 4-2 against the Charleston RiverDogs Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The RiverDogs scored twice in the sixth and one in the seventh to take the first of this three-game set.
Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. Jake Cave and Cito Culver reached on back-to-back singles of West Virginia starter John Kuchno. A double play ball advanced Cave to third base and he later scored on an errant pickoff throw by Kuchno.
West Virginia captured the lead in the top of the third inning. Ashley Ponce reached on a fielder's choice and Barrett Barnes followed with his second single of the game. Dilson Herrera tripled both home and put the Power ahead 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, the RiverDogs plated two runs against the Power bullpen. Kuchno tossed four innings and gave way to Lance Breedlove in the fifth. The right-handed reliever allowed three consecutive base hits, the last of which was a single by Claudio Custodio that brought home Kelvin De Leon to tie the game. Bryton Trepagnier took over for Breedlove with runners on the corners and surrendered a double to Cave that allowed the go-ahead run to cross. Charleston added a run off Trepagnier in the seventh on two singles and an error to close the scoring at 4-2.
Breedlove (1-2) took the loss by RiverDogs starter Gabe Encinas (3-0) earned the win. Charlie Short worked a four batter ninth for his first save. West Virginia managed just five hits in the game, two of which came from Barrett Barnes.
West Virginia and Charleston continue this series on Wednesday morning at 11:05. The Power will send Tyler Glasnow to the hill against Vicente Campos. West Virginia returns to Appalachian Power Park on May 1 to open a seven game, eight day homestand against the Greensboro Grasshoppers and Greenville Drive.
