Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 23, 2013) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators couldn't overcome an error-filled night, falling to the Rome Braves, 5-3, on Tuesday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. The Intimidators committed five errors on the evening, leading to four unearned runs.
Kannapolis put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the ninth with two outs as Jean Almanzar walked and Micah Johnson fought through a controversial at-bat to leg out an infield single before Adam Heisler grounded out to end the game. With a full count, Johnson appeared to draw ball four but was ruled to have fouled off the pitch, extending the at-bat.
Rome took advantage of two Tyler Williams errors to plate two runs in the first inning. Ronald Luna, who doubled with one out in the frame, scored on a Williams throwing error that allowed batter Levi Hyams to reach second base. Hyams later scored on a Carlos Franco double for an early 2-0 lead.
Kannapolis (9-10) responded in the home half of the inning, benefitting from a fielding blunder by Rome's third baseman that allowed Michael Marjama to reach base. Jason Coats singled to cash Marjama, putting the Intimidators on the board. Coats finished the game 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, extending his hitting streak to 11 games and raising his average to .378, one of the tops in the South Atlantic League.
Coats joined Johnson and Heisler with two-hit nights. Johnson walked in the third inning and turned it into a triple, stealing second and third before Heisler's sac-fly tied the game, 2-2. Johnson stole a season-high three bases, extending his SAL-leading total to 15 on the year.
The Intimidators took the lead in the fourth when Zach Fisher doubled home Coats for a 3-2 edge. The lead, however, would not hold up.
Jake Cose (2-2) suffered his second straight loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits over 5.0 innings. With two outs in the fifth, Hyams singled and Josh Elander tripled to even the score, 3-3. Elander crossed the plate on a passed ball to give Rome the lead, 4-3.
Rome starter Williams Perez (3-1) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) over 5.0 innings. Braves relievers Carlos Perez, Zach Jadofsky and Shae Simmons combined to work four scoreless frames, and Simmons secured his seventh save of the season.
The Braves (9-9) added a run on a wacky play in the eighth inning. Intimidators reliever Adam Lopez walked Franco, who then stole second, forcing an errant throw from Kannapolis catcher Zach Fisher. The ball went into the outfield and got past center fielder Adam Heisler, allowing Franco to score on the play.
The Intimidators and Braves play the second game of this three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. For ticket information, call the F&M Bank Box Office at (704) 932-3267 or visit the team's website at IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
