Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (August 4, 2009) - The West Virginia Power left the bases loaded three times on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park and the wasted opportunities cost them, as they left 13 men on base throughout the night in a 7-5 loss to the Kannapolis Intimidators.
The Intimidators plated a pair of runs in the second inning to take an early lead. Jared Mitchell drove in the first run on a single and Brandon Short was plunked by Hunter Strickland's 0-2 pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the next run. Dan Black's base hit scored Jon Gilmore in the fourth inning and Drew Garcia belted a two-run double with two outs in the fourth to give the Intimidators their largest lead of the night.
West Virginia began their comeback with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Quincy Latimore doubled down the left field line to score Tony Sanchez, before Kyle Morgan came home on a wild pitch and Latimore scored the final run of the inning on Greg Picart's single. West Virginia tied the game two innings later. Adenson Chourio tripled to right center field, brining in Danny Bomback in the process and Chourio scored the tying run moments later on Robbie Grossman's double.
The Intimidators took the lead a half inning later when Luis Sierra deposited Aaron Pribanic's 0-2 pitch over the wall in right field for his first homerun of the season. The two-run shot was the eventual game winner. West Virginia had the bases loaded in the ninth inning when Bobby Spain popped out to Gilmore at third to end the game.
Kevin Asselin (4-3) allowed a pair of runs on three hits over two and two-thirds, while striking out three to earn the victory. Enrique Lechuga (1) retired Bobby Spain in the ninth inning to secure the save. Aaron Pribanic (0-1) allowed a pair of runs four hits over four innings in his Power debut and was tagged with the loss.
West Virginia fell to 46-58 overall, and 19-15 in the second half after the loss, while the Intimidators improved to 59-48 overall and 22-15 in the second half after the win. Starling Marte, Robbie Grossman, Kyle Morgan, Quincy Latimore and Adenson Chourio all turned in two-hit performances for the Power. Marte has now hit safely in 18 straight games and has reached in all 29 games with the Power. His 29 game on base streak is a team high. Latimore's two-hit performance gives him 101 hits on the year, making him the first Power player to eclipse 100 hits this season.
West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. The Power will start right hander Gabriel Alvarado (5-9, 5.24) and the Intimidators will counter with right hander James Albury (0-0, 7.88). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
