Hagerstown Suns News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (14-22) picked up three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 4-1 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds (19-18) on Tuesday.
A.J. Morris started the game for Hagerstown, and after allowing a run in the bottom of the first inning, settled down to pitch very well. Morris, the Washington Nationals fourth-round pick in the 2009 Draft, allowed just one run in five innings of work while striking out four Shorebirds.
Morris was matched, pitch-for-pitch by Delmarva's starter Chris Salberg. Salberg lasted six innings and allowed just one run on three hits and two walks.
The lone run for Hagerstown against Salberg came in the top of the fourth inning as Steve Lombardozzi doubled and scored on a single to left field by Charlie Fermaint.
Patrick Arnold took over from Morris in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings while striking out two batters before Juan Jaime came in to pitch the eighth inning.
Jaime, normally a starter for the Suns, pitched one perfect inning and struck out two batters. The final pitch of the inning by Jaime was a high fastball past first baseman Elvin Polanco that registered at 98-mph on the stadium radar display.
The Suns offense, fired up by Jaime's display, came to life in the top of the ninth, as Derek Norris walked before Tyler Moore tripled to left-center field, giving the Suns a 2-1 lead.
Steven Souza then doubled down the right field line, driving in Norris before scoring himself two batters later on a groundout by Michael Guerrero.
Carlos Peralta came on to pitch the ninth for Hagerstown, and though he put two base runners on, the righthander recorded his sixth save of the season.
Jaime picked up the win, moving to 1-0 on the season, while Delmarva reliever TR Keating (5-3), took the loss.
Game two of the five game series between the Suns and Shorebirds starts at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
