Hickory Crawdads News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads late comeback attempt fell just short, 7-6, against the Greensboro Grasshoppers before 4,670 fans at NewBridge Bank Park on Tuesday night.
Both starters -- RHP Wilfredo Boscan for Hickory and RHP Johnny Dorn for Greensboro -- alternated scoreless frames through the first three innings, before Greensboro moved ahead in the bottom of the fourth. After back-to-back strikeouts by Boscan to start the inning, C Kyle Skipworth struck with a two-out solo homer over the right field wall to put the Grasshoppers ahead, 1-0.
The Grasshoppers (12-25, 49-58) struck for another run against Boscan in the bottom of the fifth inning, before RHP Fabio Castillo took over on the mound. Castillo retired the final out in the fifth, but then the Grasshoppers struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Crawdads (20-17, 53-53) came racing back to tie the game with five runs in the top of the seventh against the combination of RHP Johnny Dorn, RHP Jared Yecker and RHP Brandon Todd (3-3). With the bases loaded and two out, CF Cody Podraza turned on a pay-off pitch and belted it to the wall in left center field for a bases-clearing, three-run triple to make it 5-3. Podraza then scored on an RBI single by 2B Mike Hollander, pulling Hickory to within a tally. 1B Erik Morrison then reached on a wild pitch that he struck out on, which moved Hollander to second. Hollander came on in to tie the game on a two-out RBI single by C Doug Hogan, evening the score 5-5.
However, Skipworth took a pitch from RHP Jake Brigham (2-6) over the left field wall for a two-run homer, his second of the game, in the bottom of the seventh. The Grasshoppers held on to the 7-5 lead through a scoreless eighth inning, before the game shifted to the ninth.
Facing the closer RHP Pete Andrelczyk, Hogan extended the game with a double to right center field, and then scored on an RBI single by RF Miguel Alfonzo, again making it just a one-run game. Andrelczyk, though, retired 3B Matt West on a ground out to short, closing the 7-6 win for Greensboro. Brigham was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while Todd registered the win and Andrelczyk logged the save for the Grasshoppers.
