Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - With the game knotted at two, the Augusta GreenJackets scored six times on six hits and never looked back, earning a 10-6 win over the Charleston RiverDogs in the opener of a five-game set from Lake Olmstead Stadium on Tuesday night.
With one out in the fourth inning of a tie game, the Jackets got four straight hits, including an RBI single by Ehire Adrianza and a run-scoring double by Wendell Fairley to take a 4-2 lead. After a walk loaded the bases, Charlie Culberson singled and Vladimir Frias bounced into a fielder's choice to grow the lead by two more. Francisco Peguero plated the remaining two baserunners with his third triple of the year to cap the inning, a frame that saw the Jackets send 11 hitters to the plate.
Eric Surkamp was wild, but did enough to earn the victory for the Jackets. Surkamp (7-5) scattered seven hits in 5.2 innings, allowing two runs and striking out seven. He did walk three batters and hit another, pitching out of one jam with a double play ball and another with a crucial pickoff in the third inning with runners at the corners.
Augusta took a two-run lead in the first when South Atlantic League RBI leader Josh Mazzola knocked in a pair with his 24th double of the season. The âDogs answered with two in the third to tie the game before the six-run fourth gave the Jackets the lead for good. Johnny Monell scored on a wild pitch and knocked in a run in his next at-bat to grow the lead by two more in the fifth and sixth respectively.
Charleston threatened to come back, scoring four in the seventh with two outs on singles by Neall French and Garrison Lassiter and a Mitch Abeita two-RBI double. After the double, Edwin Quirarte retired the next four hitters he faced while Chris Wilson set the RiverDogs down in order in the ninth to quiet the threat.
Brandon Braboy (2-5) took the loss for the âDogs in his fifth start of the year, firing four innings and getting touched up for eight runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Ari Ronick (6-5, 3.18) gets the ball for the GreenJackets in game two of the series on Wednesday to face Jairo Heredia (0-1, 4.91). First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
