Power extend win streak

Greensboro, NC (June 27, 2009) - The West Virginia Power snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning of Saturday night's game at NewBridge Bank Park and outscored the Grasshoppers 6-0 in the final four innings of the contest to go to 3-0 in the second half, and extended their winning streak to four games with a 9-3 victory over Greensboro.

West Virginia took an early lead for the third game in a row. Starling Marte was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on Brett Willemburg's bunt single. Josue Peley singled into right field to score Marte and Willemburg scored when Adenson Chourio reached on a fielder's choice. Chourio scored the final run of he inning on Quincy Latimore's two-out single.

The Grasshoppers tied the game with a three-run fourth inning. Justin Jacobs doubled down the left field line to score Ben Lasater and Jeremy Synan scored on Danny Pertusati's base hit. Torre Langley tied the game with a sacrifice fly that allowed Jacobs to score. West Virginia regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning when Peley drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly that plated Calvin Anderson.

The Power scored three times in the seventh to pull away. Anderson's sacrifice fly brought Robbie Grossman home and Marte singled in the final two runs of the inning. Anderson struck again in the ninth with an RBI single, giving him 44 runs batted in this season and Jeremy Farrell's groundout scored Erik Huber.

Gabriel Alvarado (4-6) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out four batters over six innings in a winning effort. Newcomer Diego Moreno (1) tossed three scoreless innings of relief and held the ‘Hoppers to just a hit while striking out five batters to snag the save. Kyle Kaminska (5-5) was tagged for six runs on five hits over six innings and suffered the loss.

West Virginia improved to 30-43 overall, and 3-0 in the second half after the win, while the Grasshoppers fell to 37-36 overall and 0-3 in the second half after the loss. Quincy Latimore turned in the only multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Erik Huber's ninth inning single extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Calvin Anderson walked and singled to extend his on base streak to 12 games and Jeremy Farrell's base hit in the sixth inning extended his on base streak to 11 games. For the fourth game in a row, every Power batter reached base in the contest, including Robbie Grossman who has now reached in 19 straight games.

West Virginia will finish the four game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers at NewBridge Bank Park on Sunday afternoon. The Power will start right hander Duke Welker (0-8, 5.12) and the Grasshoppers will counter with right hander Graham Johnson (5-1, 3.00). The first pitch will be delivered at 4:05 PM.
