Crawdads edged by Intimidators, 8-7

HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads comeback attempt came up just short, 8-7, against the Kannapolis Intimidators before 1,606 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday evening, snapping a streak of back-to-back walk-off wins for Hickory against Kannapolis in this series.
Kannapolis (1-2) struck first in the top of the first inning against RHP Joe Wieland. CF Sergio Morales drove in 2B Drew Garcia with an RBI single to put the Intimidators ahead, 1-0.
The Crawdads (2-1) came right back against RHP Dexter Carter with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. CF David Paisano led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by 2B Mike Hollander. Paisano then advanced to third base on a wild pitch and came in on a passed ball, charged to C Zach Larson.
Kannapolis pulled back ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. LF Brandon Short started the rally with a double and scored on an RBI single by SS Eduardo Escobar. Garcia then hit a single to center field and Paisano attempted to throw Escobar out at third. However, the throw was offline, enabling Escobar to score on the error, making it 3-1.
The Crawdads pulled within a run in the bottom of the third with an RBI bases-loaded walk drawn by 3B Matt West, and then overtook Kannapolis with a four-run fourth inning. Hollander picked up an RBI with a single to score LF Cristian Santana and tie the game, and then 1B Erik Morrison belted a three-run home run over the left field wall to put Hickory ahead, 6-3.
The Intimidators started chipping away with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth against Wieland and RHP Fabio Castillo (1-3), before tying the game in the top of the seventh with an RBI single by 1B Dan Black off Castillo. Kannapolis kept swinging away, plating two more in the eighth charged to Castillo but surrendered by RHP Matt Nevarez, putting the Intimidators in an 8-6 lead.
Hickory pulled within a run of Kannapolis, striking in the bottom of the eighth inning against RHP Drew O'Neil. 1B Jared Bolden drew a one-out walk and moved to third base on a two-out double by Paisano. Hollander then placed an infield single perfectly in fair territory down the third base line, scoring Bolden from third.
O'Neil got out of the inning and then RHP Dan Remenowski dealt a scoreless ninth, as the Intimidators held on for the 8-7 win. Castillo was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while RHP Leroy Hunt (1-2), who tossed three scoreless innings of middle relief, earned the win and Remenowski registered the save for Kannapolis.
