Duggan's Slam Electrifies Jackets in 7-3 Win

Rome, GA -With his Augusta GreenJackets holding onto a slim 2-0 lead with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Dom Duggan decided to dive headfirst into uncharted waters. His grand slam - the first of the year for the GreenJackets - was the driving force in Augusta's 7-3 win over the Rome Braves on Saturday night at State Mutual Stadium.

The win is the fifth in a row for Augusta, equaling the longest such streak of the year for the GreenJackets and is the sixth in seven straight meetings between the two teams. They'll meet two more times before not seeing each other again until September.

The GreenJackets entered the sixth holding a 1-0 lead over the Braves on a Josh Mazzola RBI single with two outs and an 0-2 count on the Jackets right fielder. Zeke Spruill, Rome's starter and the Southern Division starting pitcher at last Tuesday's South Atlantic League All-Star Game, gave up a run on an error by shortstop Ryan Barba before the two-out Duggan blast, his second home run in as many days and just his third of the year.

Gerry Rodriguez's RBI single inched the Braves closer but Augusta would answer that score in the eighth on Charlie Culberson's run-scoring groundout. The Braves mounted a rally in the ninth with a two-run home run by Matt Kennelly but would get no closer, with Justin Fitzgerald striking out Chris Shehan to end the game with a runner on base.

Ari Ronick picked up his second straight win over the Braves with six strong innings. Ronick (5-4) allowed just six hits and an unearned run without a walk, fanning four.

Spruill (7-3) takes the loss for the Braves, unable to pitch out of the sixth inning jam. He yielded six runs, just one of which was earned, on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The GreenJackets will look to extend their winning streak to a season-high six games on Sunday afternoon with Mike Loree (4-5, 3.96) on the mound to face J.J. Hoover (3-2, 3.06).First pitch comes on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
