Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

CHARLESTON, WV - Ryan Peurifoy homered for the second straight game, but that was all the offense West Virginia could muster as they fell 3-1 to the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday evening at Appalachian Power Park.

With the Power trailing 2-0 in the second, Peurifoy stroked his solo shot in his first at-bat of the game to bring the score to 2-1. That blast made Peurifoy the fourth West Virginia (14-12) player to homer in consecutive games in 2018.

Jose Marte (3-0) earned the win after tossing 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Augusta (18-7) relievers CJ Gettman and Camilo Doval combined to hold the Power to two hits over 1.1 innings before handing the ball over to Frank Rubio (S, 5), who secured his fifth save with a scoreless ninth frame.

The GreenJackets opened up the scoring in the second after West Virginia starter Hunter Stratton (0-1) issued a walk and a hit by pitch to Orlando Garcia and Ryan Kirby, respectively, to begin the inning. Manuel Geraldo then drove them both in with a one-out double to left-center field. Stratton finished the day with four innings in his first Low-A start while fanning a career-high tying seven batters.

Evan Piechota relieved Stratton and tossed three frames of two-hit baseball, ceding just one run on a Tyler Brown RBI double that plated Geraldo. Despite giving up the run, the righty still sports a 1.08 ERA that sits amongst the top pitchers in the South Atlantic League.

Late-inning heroics were not in store for the Power offense for a second consecutive game. In the seventh, Kyle Watson nailed a leadoff double, but was unable to score. Oneil Cruz added hope with a one-out single in the eighth before consecutive batters were retired to end the inning.

Blake Cederlind struck out the side to get out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth and keep Augusta's lead at just two, but it was to no avail, as the Power were retired by Rubio after Peurifoy and Sharpe climbed aboard with a pair of singles. Lolo Sanchez then smacked a ball to the third baseman Brown, who stepped on the bag and threw across the diamond to end the game.

The Power wrap up their three-game series against the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. LHP Ike Schlabach (1-0, 3.92 ERA) will take the hill for West Virginia against RHP Aaron Phillips (1-0, 3.60 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com, via the TuneIn Radio App and the MiLB First Pitch App.

Those games are loaded with fun promotions at Appalachian Power Park, including Star Wars Night on Friday, May 4, Pirates and Princesses Night on Saturday, May 5, Harry Potter Day on Sunday, May 6, and so much more.
