
Power Drop Fifth Straight

Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost Thursday night to the Charleston RiverDogs 15-3 at Appalachian Power Park. The RiverDogs scored at least one run six different innings to claim the series opener and send the Power to their fifth straight loss.
Charleston took a 2-0 lead against West Virginia starter Matt Benedict in the first inning, but the Power managed to get one back in the home half of the inning. Alen Hanson walked and moved from first to third on an infield single by Kirk Singer. Hanson then scored on a ground out by Jose Osuna as West Virginia trailed by a 2-1 count.
The RiverDogs added a run in the second and two in the third to build a 5-1 advantage. The Power cut the score by one with a run on a ground out in the third and trailed 5-3 after five inningson Gregory Polanco's seventh home run; a solo shot to left in the home half of the fifth.
Charleston added two runs in the sixth off Benedict and scored eight runs against the West Virginia bullpen in the eighth and ninth innings, including three runs on back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth by Ben Gamel and Tyler Austin.
Benedict (2-2) took the loss after surrendering 7 runs, five of which were earned, on six hits over five and a third innings of work. The win was awarded to Mariel Checo (3-0), the first reliever in for the RiverDogs, who tossed three innings of one hit, one run ball.
West Virginia returned to Appalachian Power Park on the heels of a sweep at the hands of the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
Game two of this four game set is slated for Friday night. Ryan Hafner will make the start for the Power against the RiverDogs Caleb Cotham. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
