Power comeback falls short

Charleston, WV (May 1, 2009) - The West Virginia Power rallied to erase a 4-0 deficit against the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night, but Steven Souza hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to snap a 4-4 tie as the Suns took the second game of the series 6-4.

Derrick Norris drove in his first of four runs in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to plate Nick Arata. Norris struck again two innings later with a three-run homer, his fourth of the season. The Power plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half. Bobby Spain's first of two hits was an RBI single to plate the first run and Jeremy Farrell reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Chase D'Arnaud to score.

Spain doubled with one out in the sixth inning and moved to third base on Andrew Walker's base hit before scoring on Farrell's sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. Robbie Grossman smacked his second double of the game with one out in the seventh inning and scored the tying run on Quincy Latimore's single. Souza's two-run homer in the eighth inning was his first of the season, and gave the Suns the lead for good.

Patrick Arnold, (1-0) a native of Huntington, West Virginia earned the victory, allowing just a run on two hits over an inning and a third. Carlos Peralta (1) tossed a pair of scoreless innings to earn the save. Yoffri Martinez (0-3) allowed a pair of runs on two hits over two innings and suffered the loss.

West Virginia fell to 6-16 with the loss, and has lost four in a row while the Suns improved to 8-11 after the victory. Grossman paced the Power with a 3-for-5 performance. He's reached in 12 straight games and has reached multiple times in six straight. Bobby Spain also turned in a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. Left hander Rudy Owens (2-0, 2.29) will start for West Virginia and the Suns will counter with right hander Marcos Frias (0-1, 3.68). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
