Hagerstown Suns News Release

CHARLESTON, WV: The Hagerstown Suns (8-11) beat the West Virginia Power (6-16) 6-4 on Friday behind home runs by Derek Norris and Steven Souza.

The Suns took the lead in the top of the first inning, as shortstop Nick Arata walked to lead off the game and advanced to third base on a single by second baseman Steve Lombardozzi. Norris, the Suns catcher, then flew out to center field, driving in Arata and giving the Suns a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Norris struck again with Arata and Lombardozzi on base. After West Virginia starter Duke Welker (0-3) walked both Arata and Lombardozzi, Norris hit his fourth home run of the season over the left field fence, and the Suns lead was extended to 4-0.

However, the lead did not hold up, as the Power scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as well as single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the score at 4-4.

In the top of the eighth inning, with two outs center fielder Robby Jacobsen dropped down a bunt for a single to the third base side to set the stage for Souza. The Suns third baseman delivered with a towering home run that just clipped the foul pole, and gave the Suns a 6-4 lead.

The home run was Souza's first of the season.

Starting pitcher Paul Demny made his season debut for the Suns and threw well. The rigthander pitched five innings and allowed just two earned runs.

Patrick Arnold (1-0), a native of nearby Huntington, WV, picked up the win with one and one third innings of work out of the bullpen. Carlos Peralta earned his first save of the season by pitching two scoreless innings.

The Suns and Power will play game three of their four game series on Saturday at 7:05 PM. The Suns won game one of the series on Thursday. The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
