Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - Lexington used three pitchers and a career day at the dish from MJ Melendez to silence West Virginia on Friday evening, as the Legends took game two of the four-game series, 6-0, at Appalachian Power Park.
The Power were held hitless by Lexington (19-19) starter Carlos Hernandez (2-1) through the first five innings, as the right-hander struck out five and walked three before exiting with a season-best 87 pitches. Holden Capps allowed the first West Virginia (23-15) hit in the sixth on a Calvin Mitchell double to right, but was able to preserve the shutout with three scoreless frames before Sal Biasi finished the job in the ninth.
Conversely, Power starter Sergio Cubilete (0-3) allowed five runs through as many innings while striking out half a dozen batters. The hurler fared well against hitters three through nine in the order, allowing just a single and a walk to those seven batters. The inverse occured against Travis Jones and Melendez, who hit one and two, respectively, for Lexington. The two finished 6-for-9 with a pair of doubles and home runs, while Melendez ended up doing most of the damage. The Florida native went 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and a career-high five RBIs.
Ike Schlabach stymied the Legends in relief of Cubilete. He gave up just one hit through three innings and struck out three. Drew Fischer worked the ninth, ceding an unearned tally on an RBI knock from Travis Jones.
The Power continue their four-game series against the Lexington Legends tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. West Virginia will send RHP Gavin Wallace (3-0, 3.86 ERA) to the bump, while Lexington will counter with southpaw Garrett Davila (2-1, 3.28 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com, via the TuneIn Radio App and the MiLB First Pitch App.
Tomorrow, the Power will have an umbrella giveaway for the first 1,000 fans through the gates, which open at 5 p.m. West Virginia will close out their homestand Sunday with a Kidz Sunday Funday, where kids can run the basepaths after the game, presented by SMART529 College Savings Program, and play catch in the outfield pregame.
