Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Hagerstown Suns 2-1 in 10 innings Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. Taylor Lewis scored the winning run on a force out at second.
Each team scored in the second inning. The Suns scored the first run for the first time in the series, taking a 1-0 advantage when Zack Von Rosenberg walked Cole Leonida with the bases loaded in the top half of the inning.
In the bottom of the second, Dan Gamache was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Jose Osuna followed with a single to move Gamache into scoring position. Chris Lashmet singled to center to drive in Gamache and even the score at ones.
Both pitching staffs settled in from the third inning on. Von Rosenberg and Power reliever Robbie Kilcrease combined to allow one hit from the fourth through seventh innings, while West Virginia was only able to send the minimum to the plate during that same stretch. Each team had an opportunity to score late in the game, but, for the second consecutive night, were forced to play extra innings to decide the contest. Hagerstown beat West Virginia 5-2 in 10 innings on Friday.
In the bottom of the tenth, Lewis reached on a single to start the inning. After Gregory Polanco walked, Willy Garcia's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. After the Suns intentionally walked Gamache to load the bases, Osuna hit an 0-1 pitch from Greg Holt towards short. Jason Martinson threw to second for a force out, but Cutter Dykstra's throw to first for an inning-ending double play sailed high and allowed Lewis to score the winning run.
Von Rosenberg did not factor in the decision, but did throw five innings on four hit ball with four strikeouts. Clario Perez (1-1) pitched the final two innings of relief for the win, while Holt (1-1) was charged with the loss. Polanco and Lashmet had multi-hit games for the Power to help snap a four-game home losing streak.
West Virginia and Hagerstown meet on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the series and first half of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm and Nick Kingham is slated to start for the Power against the Suns Alex Meyer.
