
Power Bats Stay Hot in 17-9 Victory

The West Virginia Power beat the Lexington Legends 17-9 on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. One day after reaching on a season-high 19 hits in a 9-0 win over the Legends, the Power used a 17-hit attack to generate a season-best 17 runs for the win.
The Legends gained the early lead with a run in the second inning off Power starter Eliecer Navarro. Mike Kvasnicka and Emilio King reached on back-to-back singles before Bryce Lane walked to load the bases. With two down, Tyler Burnett singled to left to make it a 1-0 lead, but King was thrown out at home to end the inning while trying to add an additional run.
West Virginia answered with two in the bottom of the second. Dan Grovatt walked and scored on a triple by Elias Diaz, who then scored on a double by Eric Avila for a 2-1 Power lead.
Andy Vasquez made it a 3-1 lead in the third with a solo home run against Carlos Quevedo.
After Lexington cut the deficit to one with a run in the top of the fourth, West Virginia tagged Quevedo for five more runs in the bottom of the inning en route to scoring eight in the half inning on nine hits. Vasquez hit his second home run of the game to key the inning; a three-run shot to extend the lead. The Power utility man became the first West Virginia batter to hit two home runs in any one game this season. The Power sent 12 to the plate in the inning to build an 11-2 lead.
The Legends would rally, however, in the sixth and seventh innings. Emilio King hit a two- run home run in the sixth to cut the Power lead down to seven at 11-4. Lexington then scored five in the seventh as the West Virginia advantage dissipated to two. Delino DeShields Jr. and Domingo Santana hit solo home runs of Power reliever Zac Fuesser, who also allowed four consecutive batters at the bottom of the order to reach.
With an 11-9 lead, West Virginia sealed the win in the home half of the seventh with six runs on three hits, three walks, and one error. The Power sent ten to the plate in the seventh to boost the two run lead to eight at 17-9.
Navarro (4-0) gained the win with five and a third innings of work, while Quevedo (8-6) was charged with the loss. Casey Sadler recorded the final out in the top of the seventh and pitched the final two plus innings for his second save of the series and fourth of the season.
Every Power player scored at least one run and three different players drove in four runs each as West Virginia claimed its 34th win of the season at Appalachian Power Park to guarantee a winning home record in 2011. The Power are 34-32 at home this season with one game remaining on Tuesday night.
Porfirio Lopez will start the final home game of the season for West Virginia against Ruben Alaniz for Lexington at 7:05 pm.
