PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Pitchers Jeremy Powell and Justin Thomas bolstered the Tribe pitching staff with nine innings of 10 strikeout, two run ball and shortstop Argenis Diaz drove in four runs to lead the Indianapolis Indians to a 7-2 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on a rainy Tuesday night at McCoy Stadium.

The win improves the Indians record to 9-10, while the loss drops the Red Sox to 8-11 on the season. With the victory, the Tribe has now won four straight contests.

On the heels of a 15-inning, 250-pitch, 4 hour, 57 minute marathon, the Indians turned to Powell (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) to give the pitching staff a boost and the starting pitcher was up to the task. The right-handed journeyman gutted out a gritty five inning, two-run performance to earn his first win of the season.

Not to be outdone, Indians' LHP Thomas (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 SO) turned in four scoreless innings of sparkling relief to earn his first save of the season and give the Tribe bullpen a much needed night off.

The Tribe jumped on the board first to take an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the second inning. With one out in the frame, 1B Steve Pearce walked and RF Brandon Moss was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Two batters and one walk later, Diaz, who recently returned from a short two-game stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates, strode to the plate with the bases loaded and worked the count full before lining the sixth pitch of his at-bat to right field for a two-run single.

Indianapolis added to its lead with a single run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. With one out, Pearce reached via a walk and stole second to get into scoring position. After C Luke Carlin walked, Pearce swiped third base and scored on a throwing error by the Pawtucket catcher to give the Tribe a three-run cushion.

The Red Sox made things interesting in the home half of the fifth inning with two runs on two extra-base hits to cut the Indians lead to 3-2. 2B Kevin Frandsen led off the frame with a single, stole second, and after a pop out by RF Bubba Bell, LF Daniel Nava and CF Josh Reddick lined back-to-back doubles to right field to pull to within a run of the Tribe.

The Tribe added a single run in the eighth, before breaking open the contest with three runs in the ninth to take a 7-2 lead. With two outs and runners at first and second in the ninth, Friday lined a run-scoring double to left field, and, following the second baseman's two-base hit, Diaz stroked a two-run, two-out single to right field to give the Indians a five-run lead.

The Tribe was paced offensively by Diaz (2-for-2, 4 RBI, 1 BB), Friday (3-for-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and Pearce (0-for-2, 3 R, 3 BB), while Frandsen (3-for-4, 1 R) was the only batter to record multiple hits for the Red Sox.

Pawtucket starter Kason Gabbard (4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 5 SO) was saddled with the loss after allowing two earned runs in 4.1 innings of work, while reliever Fernando Cabrera (1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) gave up three runs in the ninth inning.

The two teams continue their four-game series on Wednesday, April 28 at 12:05 p.m. RHP Kevin Hart is expected to get the call for Indianapolis, while RHP Michael Bowden is the probable starter for Pawtucket.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 11:45 a.m.
