Toledo Tops Syracuse, 7-0

Toledo, Ohio - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell 7-0 to the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday night. Syracuse (12-7) has now lost two in a row after falling to the Rochester Red Wings on Monday at Alliance Bank Stadium.

The Mud Hens got to Chiefs starter Shairon Martis (0-2) for one run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Deik Scram. Martis threw a scoreless third and fourth, but Toledo knocked him out of the game in the fifth.

Danny Worth started off the inning with a single to left, and then Will Rhymes reached on a throwing error by Chiefs catcher Devin Ivany. With two on and nobody out, Jeff Frazier tripled to center field to score two runs and increase the lead to 3-0. The Mud Hens (12-8) would go on to score two more runs in the inning and lead 5-0 by the end of it.

Martis pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs and striking out five. He was relieved by Josh Wilkie who finished the fifth inning. Wilkie went 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs, struck out one and walked one.

The final two Toledo runs came in the seventh inning when Clete Thomas doubled to start things off, and with one out, Casper Wells hit his fourth home run of the season off of Wilkie.

Toledo starter Alfredo Figaro (3-0) notched the win pitching seven scoreless innings while walking one and striking out seven.

The Chiefs offense had trouble against the righthander from the Dominican Republic. Syracuse went 0-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base. The Chiefs collected five hits to the Mud Hens ten.

Game two of the series is Wednesday with Chuck James (1-0, 0.00) going for the Chiefs and Ruddy Lugo (1-2, 7.07) taking the mound for the Mud Hens. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
