
Bulls Drop Road Trip Opener, 9-5 at Buffalo

(Buffalo, NY) Chris Richard homered to cap a three-run rally in the fourth, but Buffalo rallied to beat the Bulls 9-5 on Tuesday, the start of an eight-game road trip.
Durham took the lead in the fourth with three straight singles by Justin Ruggiano, Hank Blalock and Dan Johnson, and a second run scored on a double play ball off the bat of Joe Dillon. Richard then followed with a blast to left center for his third homer of the year, and a 3-0 lead.
Buffalo answered in the next half inning with five runs off starter Carlos Hernandez, all with two out and none on. The Bisons loaded the bases with two out on two singles and a hit batter, and veteran major leaguer Mike Jacobs tied the score on a three-run double to left center. Mike Hessman the followed with a two-run homer for a 5-3 lead.
Durham answered with two in the fith on back-to-back two-out run-scoring hits from Blalock and Dan Johnson. Buffalo took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame against Joaquin Benoit (0-1) on an RBI groundout of Ruben Tejada.
Durham had a chance to re-take the lead but left runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Buffalo put the game away with three in the eighth, the last two on Hessman's second homer.
Durham (14-6) had 12 hits, two each from Elliot Johnson, Ruggiano, Blalock, Dan Johnson, and Alvin Colina.
Jeremy Hellickson will start for Durham on Wednesday as the Bulls look to even their mark on an eight-game trip at 1-1. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 5:50, with first pitch at 6:05.
