PCL1 Round Rock Express

Powell shuts down, shuts out first place Missions

August 3, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release

Quietly, Greg Powell has gone from a middle reliever to a stalwart in the Round Rock Express rotation, at least until Sunday night.

Powell twirled one of the finest games of the year for the Express in a complete game, 3-0 shutout of the first place San Antonio Missions.

Powell was moved to the rotation May 27 and has quickly developed into one of the Express' most consistant starters: he had gone exactly six innnings his last five starts. Against the Missions, though, he moved from consistant to dominant.

He limited the Texas League's best hitting team to a scant three singles and was rarely in any kind of trouble. The nine scoreless innings also lowered his earned run average to 3.61, topping the Round Rock rotation.

San Antonio's Cha Seung Baek wasn't far from matching Powell, but John Tamargo provided all the scoring the Express would need. A night after driving in the winning run, Tamargo scored the first run in the opening frame on an error by third baseman Justin Leone and drove in the second run in the fourth with an RBI single.

Powell (6-7) was the winner and Baek (2-1) was the hard luck loser.

After spliting a second straight series with San Antonio, Round Rock will head to Midland for a six-game series starting Monday at 7 p.m.
