Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Khalil Greene tied the game with a three-run home run in the ninth inning and Xavier Nady won it with a two-out RBI double to center as the Portland Beavers came back for a 5-4 win over the Fresno Grizzlies Saturday night before 10,815 at PGE Park.
Down 4-1, Bernie Castro's one-out double jump-started Portland's ninth-inning rally. Mario Valdez followed with a walk, setting the stage for Greene's home run--his seventh of the season--off reliever Steve Montgomery, who fell to 2-2 with the loss.
Jason Bay later drew a two-out walk and scored the game's winning run on Nady's clutch double to center.
Greene was 3-for-4 with two singles, a walk and two stolen bases to lead the Beavers (57-58). Castro added a triple and scored two runs while Ben Risinger had a pair of hits.
Kevin Walker improved to 2-1 with two innings of scoreless relief work to keep the Beavers in it. Steve Watkins, making his fourth appearance, pitched the sixth and seventh and struck out four. He retired all six batters faced in his two innings as the Beavers' bullpen allowed just two base runners over the final four innings.
Three Portland pitchers combined to strike out 14 Fresno batters.
The win helped the Beavers keep pace in the Pacific Coast League North. Third-place Portland remains three games behind Edmonton in the division.
Brian Dallimore led off the game with an infield single and stole second base. Marvin Benard, with Fresno on a major league rehab assignment, laced an RBI double down the left-field line and Tony Torcato followed with a run-scoring single to center to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.
Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two out, Portland starter Clay Condrey struck out Craig Kuzmic to end the damage. Condrey struck out eight, giving up four runs on seven hits in five innings.
Jimmy Anderson was in line to get his second win of the year until the Beavers rallied against the Grizzlies' bullpen. Anderson gave up a run on six hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Fresno (44-70) went up by four in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Kuzmic and an RBI single by Benard.
Castro tripled to left center with one out in the bottom of the fifth; he scored the Beavers' first run one batter later on a groundout by Keith Lockhart.
The Beavers, who stranded a season-high 14 base runners Friday night, left the bases loaded in the sixth and left 10 men on in the game.
