Sounds Rebound With 6-3 Win Over Sky Sox

Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — One night after being no-hit, the Sounds quickly dispelled any chance of back-to-back no-no's as Nashville centerfielder Rich Thompson led off the game with a sharp single, sparking the Sounds offense to 13 hits in their 6-3 victory against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Sunday night at Greer Stadium.

Thompson's single and his steals of second and third (his 12th and 13th with Nashville) were followed by John Barnes' single over a drawn-in infield, plating Thompson with the first run of the game.

The Sounds kept applying the heat to Sky Sox starter Jason Young (6-6) one inning later. With two down in the second and Aaron Holbert at second after reaching on a fielder's choice and stealing a bag, Sounds starter Ryan Vogelsong helped his own cause with a single through the right side for his first RBI of the year.

Vogelsong would pitch only through the third inning when he was pulled in a manager's decision after throwing only 44 pitches in three scoreless frames.

Nashville doubled its lead to four in the bottom of the third with a two-out, two-run rally. Barnes and Tony Alvarez hit consecutive doubles and Mike Gulan singled over the head of Sky Sox third baseman Willie Morales.

The Sounds' lead would eventually extend to five runs as they plated a single run in the last of the fifth. With one out, newly-acquired infielder Freddy Sanchez, making his first start as a Sound, collected his first hit in a Nashville uniform with a double to right-center. After a Barnes walk, Alvarez executed a hit-and-run play with a single to right, bringing Sanchez plateward. On the evening, Sanchez finished with a 2-for-5 night at the dish.

Colorado Springs would creep back into the game starting in the top of the sixth when catcher Kit Pellow hit a solo shot to left-center off of Mike Holtz for his 16th longball. The Sky Sox would add two in the top of the eighth after Pablo Ozuna and Clint Barmes opened the frame with back-to-back doubles down the left-field line. Nashville reliever John Grabow almost escaped the jam with just one run crossing but Barnes dropped a Mark Sweeney fly ball, allowing Barmes to score.

Pat Mahomes quelled the comeback attempt, inducing Wendell Magee to pop up to Rob Mackowiak at first, and finished the game to pick up his second save. The Sounds added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Thompson plated Mackowiak with a sacrifice fly.

Holtz (2-2) earned the win in relief of Vogelsong, throwing 2 1/3 innings and allowing one run while fanning three.

The Sounds and Sky Sox play game three of the series on Monday at 7 p.m. at Greer Stadium. Nashville right-hander Nelson Figueroa (11-5, 3.16) goes for his Pacific Coast League-leading 12th win. He will be opposed by Colorado Springs southpaw Cory Vance (8-9, 4.92).
