Stockton Ports News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports punctuated the road portion of their 2018 regular season schedule with a lopsided win on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The Ports got two home runs from Collin Theroux, including his second grand slam of the season, on their way to an 11-5 win over the San Jose Giants and a three-game series sweep, their fifth sweep of the season.

The Ports broke the ice in the top of the third inning on a two-out RBI double by Luke Persico to take a 1-0 lead. San Jose came back in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs, the first of which came on a solo home run by Jacob Heyward, his third in the last two games. The Giants took their first lead on a two-out RBI double by Gio Brusa, scoring Heath Quinn who'd doubled two batters earlier, to take a 2-1 lead.

Stockton tied it in the top of the fourth on the first of two home runs hit by Theroux, a solo blast to left, knotting the score at 2-2. San Jose took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Sandro Cabrera, making it a 3-2 Giants advantage.

The Cabrera homer was the final run allowed by Ports starter Wyatt Marks (2-0), who earned the win after going five innings and allowing six hits while walking three and striking out seven.

The Ports enjoyed their biggest inning of the afternoon in the top of the fifth. With runners at the corners and one out, Persico tied the game at 3-3 on an RBI single to left. Viosergy Rosa came up next and put the Ports in front for good with an RBI double to center to make it a 4-3 contest and knock Giants starter Mac Marshall (0-6) from the contest. Peter Lannoo took over and, after striking out Edwin Diaz, intentionally walked Sandber Pimentel to load the bases. Theroux came up with the bases full and delivered a grand slam to left that ballooned the Ports lead to 8-3. For Theroux, it marked his second multi-home run game of the season and his second grand slam of the year.

Marshall would suffer the loss, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Lannoo would allow two runs on two hits over 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The Ports cemented their lead in the eighth inning on a Giants miscue. With the bases loaded and two outs, Rosa hit a ball to the left field warning track that was dropped by Heyward, a three-run error that ran the Stockton lead to 11-3. All three runs were unearned for Giants reliever Sam Coonrod.

After two perfect innings worked by Brendan Butler beginning in the sixth and a scoreless eighth worked by Andrew Tomasovich, Jake Bray took over in the ninth and found himself in a bases-loaded situation after giving up back-to-back singles and a walk. Bray would give up back-to-back sac-flies to Brusa and Wander Franco, but then get Kelvin Beltre to strike out swinging to end the ballgame.

Winners of five straight, the Ports return home to close out the regular season with a four-game series versus the Visalia Rawhide. Left-hander Zack Erwin (8-10, 5.33 ERA) makes the start in the series opener for Stockton. Visalia has yet to announce its rotation for the series. First pitch at Banner Island Ballpark is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
