Portland Winterhawks News Release
Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
As was announced earlier today, the Winterhawks will have four players attending their countries' IIHF World Junior Championship training camps: Ryan Johansen and Brad Ross for Canada, and Sven Bartschi and Nino Niederreiter for Switzerland. The World Junior Championship runs from Dec 26 - Jan. 5 in Buffalo, New York.
The Winterhawks' march to the league's top overall record so far this season has been made with a roster comprised entirely of players the team drafted or listed. The Winterhawks don't have a single player on their roster acquired via trade, instead, 15 players were selected in the WHL Bantam Draft, six are players the team listed and two were taken in the CHL Import Draft. No other team in the WHL has a roster without a single player having been acquired via trade.
While much of the attention on the Winterhawks is focused on the 10 NHL draft picks and signed players, the team also has three players among the league leaders in rookie scoring. Sven Bartschi (39 points), Derrick Pouliot (13 points) and Brendan Leipsic (12 points) are all among the WHL's top-20 rookie scorers. Portland and Prince George are the only two teams in the league with three players who rank among the league's top-20 rookie scorers.
Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:
The Teddy Bear Toss is under two weeks away, set for next Saturday, December 11, at the Rose Garden against Prince George at 7 p.m. Tickets are moving quickly and fans who want to attend this popular game will want to purchase their tickets early, as the game is expected to sell out in advance. In addition, in the days after the Teddy Bear Toss players will deliver bears to local hospitals. Details about those visits for media who wish to cover them will be released in the near future.
