Portland Winterhawks News Release
Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
The Winterhawks earned the #1 spot among WHL teams, and third spot overall among all 60 Canadian Hockey League teams, in the first BMO MasterCard top-10 rankings last week. The weekly rankings of the CHL's Top 10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.
Sven Bartschi put on a show Saturday in preseason action, when he scored four goals in a 6-2 win over the Kootenay Ice in Kennewick, WA. Bartschi, a Switzerland native, was the seventh overall pick in the 2010 CHL Import Draft, a pick the Winterhawks acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the deal that brought Luca Sbisa to Portland last season. Bartschi split last season between the Zug Under-20 team in the Swiss Elite Jr. A League and Langenthal with the Swiss National League. With Zug he registered 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points in just nine games. Upon joining Langenthal he totaled six goals and five assists for 11 points in 37 games, then added three assists in seven playoff games.
The win over Kootenay, a game in which Portland had only four regulars from last season in the lineup, brought Portland's preseason record to 4-0-0-1. Despite 13 players attending NHL training camps, the Winterhawks scored 12 goals in two games in Kennewick, and over the five preseason games the team is averaging 4.8 goals per game. They close out the preseason Saturday in Seattle.
Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:
The remodeling of Valley Ice Arena, to be known as the Winterhawks Skating Center upon completion, is continuing at a rapid pace. The ice is currently being put into the facility, and the Junior Hawks are scheduled to skate at the facility next weekend. The Winterhawks project a public grand reopening to take place in late October.
