Portland Winterhawks News Release
Happenings On The Ice:
The Winterhawks depart Tuesday for a three-game road trip to British Columbia, so any media who wish to interview the team in person will need to do so following this afternoons practice at the Memorial Coliseum. Players and coaches will be available by phone the rest of the week.
This week the Winterhawks will be looking to build on the success theyve had on the road so far this season, where they are 9-4. Their nine wins away from home is tied for the league lead, and is already their highest since 2005-06. Last season Portland had seven road wins, in 2007-08 they had just three, and in 2006-07 the team won six away from home. 23 games this season the Winterhawks have scored 89 goals, the highest mark in the Western Conference. Theyve done it with balanced scoring, as only Chris Francis ranks among the leagues Top-20 in scoring; Franciss 27 points ties him for 20th in the WHL. However, Portland has four players with 20+ points: Francis, Luke Walker Troy Rutkowski and Nino Niederreiter whose 20 points ranks sixth among all first-year players.
Happenings Off The Ice:
The annual Bank of the West Teddy Bear Toss is coming up next Saturday, November 28. The Winterhawks will be looking to set a new WHL record, currently held by the Calgary Hitmen with 26,919 bears. Fans can purchase bears for just $1 at local Dollar Tree stores. All teddy bears collected at the game will be donated to local childrens hospitals and charities.
Portland Winterhawks players will be signing autographs at the Oregon City Fred Meyer on Sunday, November 29 at 5 p.m. The store is located at 1839 Molalla Avenue in Oregon City.
