Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Tri-City Americans' Johnny Lazo notched a hat trick Saturday as the Americans defeated the Portland Winterhawks 6-2 in the final game of Portland's three game road trip.
Two of Lazo's goals came early in the first period, sandwiched around a goal by the Americans' Mason Wilgosh as Tri-Cities opened up a 3-0 lead 6:41 into the game. Chris Francis put Portland on the board at the 15:18 mark of the first period on his 19th goal of the season, making the score 3-1 heading into the second period.
Wilgosh earned his second of the game and fourth of the season 2:31 into the second period on a shorthanded marker. Tri-City's Patrick Holland added his ninth of the season at 10:05 to make it 5-1 for the Americans, a score that would last through the end of the period.
Portland's Nino Niederreiter scored his team-leading 26th goal of the season 4:44 into the third period to cut the deficit to 5-2. Niederreiter now has goals in six of his last seven games, dating back to before the World Junior Championship. However, the Americans would again go up by four when Lazo completed the hat trick with a power play goal at the 13:55 mark, and the Americans finished with the 6-2 win.
The Winterhawks return to action Wednesday night when they host the Kamloops Blazers at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.
