(Portland, ME) - John Bowker went 4-for-5 with a home run and 5 RBI, leading Connecticut to a 15-0 victory over the Sea Dogs in the nightcap of a day/night doubleheader at Hadlock Field. The Defenders swept the doubleheader, setting up the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon.
Daniel Haigwood (3-5) made his first start since July 16 after spending a week on the disabled list with a left groin injury and suffered the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in two innings. Patrick Dobson led off the game with a solo home run in his first at-bat of the series. Connecticut scored five in the second inning off Haigwood. Simon Klink blasted a two-run homer, Dobson added an RBI double and Bowker provided a run-scoring single.
Bowker blasted a three-run homer off Jose Vaquedano in the fourth inning, giving the visitors a 9-0 cushion. The Connecticut right fielder has homered twice in the series and leads the Defenders with 17 long balls.
In the seventh inning, Mike James failed to retire a batter, yielding four hits, one walk and five runs. James gave up back-to-back homers to Tyler Von Schell and Randy Ruiz. Outfielder Jay Johnson made his first professional pitching appearance, working one inning on two hits and one run.
Joe Bateman (3-1) worked two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win for Connecticut. Starter Ryan Sadowski lasted three and 1/3 innings, scattering two hits, three walks and fanning four.
Dusty Brown had two of Portland's three hits, smacking his 14th double of the season in the fourth inning. The Sea Dogs received seven walks but finished the game 0-for-7 with runners-in-scoring position.
The Sea Dogs were swept for the second time this season in a doubleheader and the first at Hadlock Field. On Sunday afternoon, the two clubs play the rubber game of their 5-game series.
