Portland Falls to New Hampshire in Series Finale

PORTLAND, ME - Despite a three-run ninth inning, the Portland Sea Dogs fell 7-6 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs fall to 47-28 and remain in first place of the Northeast League while the Fisher Cats improve to 35-39.

Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ronaldo Hernandez connected for a two-run homer to the Maine Monster while the next batter, Tanner Nishioka, hit a solo homer to left field and pulled the Sea Dogs within one run. The Sea Dogs were unable to move any more runs across and fell, 7-6.

Diego Castillo was awarded the win for the Fisher Cats tossing 7.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five. Matthew Kent was given the loss for the Sea Dogs pitching 3.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two.

In the top of the second inning with one out, LJ Talley hit a groundball to Portland's second baseman, Tanner Nishioka. Nishioka fielded the ball, but then dropped it on the infield dirt and Talley was able to get on base. He then came around to score on an RBI single by Nick Podkul and the Fisher Cats were on the board, 1-0.

The Sea Dogs took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. After Ronaldo Hernandez and Nishioka hit back-to-back singles. A two-run double by Wil Dalton brought them both home and the Sea Dogs led, 2-1.

New Hamsphire tied the game in the top of the third inning. After a lead-off single by Tanner Kirwer, Chavez Young hit an RBI single back up the middle to centerfield and the game was tied, 2-2.

In the top of the fourth inning, Podkul drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Chris Bec. Kirwer then hit an RBI single to left field and the Fisher Cats led, 3-2.

Portland tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Sogard lined a two-out single to left field then moved to third on a single by Oscar Rangel. Maximo Castillo threw a wild pitch to the backstop and Sogard scored, tying the game 3-3.

After back-to-back hits in the top of the sixth inning by Talley and Kevin Vicuna, Podkul drove them both home with a two-run single to left field and the Fisher Cats led, 5-3.

The Fisher Cats moved another run across in the top of the seventh inning. Otto Lopez drew a walk then scored on an RBI double to the rightfield corner to extend New Hampshire's lead, 6-3.

New Hampshire plated another run in the top of the eighth inning. After a lead-off single by Vicuna, the Fisher Cats loaded the bases. Samad Taylor then hit a groundball force-out at second base and Vicuna came home to score. Portland trailed 7-3.

The Sea Dogs attempted the comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. Hudson Potts hit a lead-off single to centerfield. Ronaldo Hernandez and Tanner Nishioka hit back-to-back homers to pull Portland within one run, 7-6. Dalton then doubled to left centerfield with two-outs but was left on base when Pedro Castellanos hit a fly ball to left field for the final out.

The Sea Dogs have tomorrow, August 2nd off and will travel to Binghamton, New York to take on the Rumble Ponies for a six-game series that begins Tuesday, August 3rd at 6:35pm. They will be on the road for two weeks before returning to Hadlock Field on Tuesday, August 17th at 6:00pm.
