
Portland Defeats Everett, 4-2

Portland, OR - The Portland Winterhawks won their eighth straight game defeating a hard working Everett Silvertips team 4-2 Saturday night. Taylor Cote scored his first career WHL goal for Everett while Clayton Cumiskey rounded out the scoring for the Silvertips. Kent Simpson made 30 saves in a strong effort.
Everett and Portland skated to a scoreless first period. Kent Simpson made 12 saves for the Silvertips while Portland Winterhawks goaltender Keith Hamilton made 16 saves.
The Winterhawks scored the first goal of the game at 8:08 of the second period. Oliver Gabriel put in his third goal of the season with a hard wrist shot from the top of the left circle beating Simpson high glove side to give Portland a 1-0 lead. The Silvertips tied the game with Cote's first career WHL goal at 15:19. Cote collected a rebound on top of the crease before firing the puck off the post and past Hamilton to tie the score 1-1.
Sven Bartschi regained the lead for the Winterhawks at 4:44 of the third period. Troy Rutkowski's shot from the right circle was deflected by Bartschi on top of the crease for his 13th goal of the season and a 2-1 Portland lead. Everett tied the game at 12:52 with Cumiskey's first goal of the year. Chad Suer let off a hard slap shot from the right point that was stopped by Hamilton, the rebound went to Cumiskey's stick on top of the crease before the Everett forward scored to tie the game 2-2. Portland regained the lead at 16:52 with Nino Niederreiter's second goal of the season. Niederreiter made a great deflection while screening Simpson that went off the post and into the net for a 3-2 Winterhawks lead. Ryan Johansen scored on an empty net at 19:08 to cap a 4-2 victory.
This brings the âTips record to 6-5-1-3 with 16 points in 15 games played. Everett finishes off their three game road trip tomorrow night when the Silvertips go back up to Canada to play the Vancouver Giants at 5:00 pm.
