Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Prince George, B.C. - It took a special effort from the Edmonton Oil Kings to end their nine-game winless streak on Saturday night against the Prince George Cougars - special teams that is.

The Oil Kings scored two short-handed goals and two on the power play to beat the Cougars 7-3 at the CN Centre in Prince George, thus ending their streak of nine games without a win. Edmonton improves to 6-10-0-1 with the much needed victory and is now a third of the way through a six-game road trip.

The Oil Kings completely dominated the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the Cougars 17-7 and putting three goals on the board, as opposed to just one by the home team. Jordan Hickmott and T.J. Foster each scored a short-handed goal in the first, while Hickmott struck again for a power-play goal, and Nick Buonassisi scored with the man advantage for the Cougars.

Despite the lopsided final score, Prince George actually outscored the Oil Kings 2-1 in the middle frame to make it a tight 4-3 game heading into the third. Brock Hirsche and Greg Fraser each scored for the Cougars, but Michael St. Croix's team-leading ninth goal of the season allowed Edmonton to stay ahead by one.

Refusing to let the Cougars come back and bump their winless streak to double digits, the Oil Kings poured it on in the third period with three unanswered goals. Stephane Legault made it 5-3 on a goal that was originally waved off because, at first, it looked like the Oil King kicked the puck past goalie Ty Rimmer. Josh Lazowski made it 6-3 just 42 seconds after Legault's goal was eventually allowed, and Dylan Wruck tallied the team's second PPG of the night with 11:13 remaining to close out the scoring.

The Oil Kings outshot the Cougars 41-35 en route to the victory, which was earned by the newest member of the Edmonton squad, goalie Jon Groenheyde, who made 32 saves in just his second appearance since being traded from the Kamloops Blazers in exchange for Cam Lanigan on Thursday.

The Oil Kings are now through the first two games of their six-game road trip, which continues in Chilliwack against the Bruins on Tuesday and in Kelowna against the Rockets on Wednesday. They venture further south to play the Chiefs in Spokane on Friday, and the trip concludes on Saturday against the Ice in Kootenay. The Oil Kings finally return home to Rexall Place to play the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.

Individual game tickets for all Oil Kings home games are on sale now and start at just $15 in the ATB Financial Zone. Season seats start at less than $9 per game, with the addition of some new Mini-Packs and Flex Plans this season as well. Tickets are available at any Ticketmaster outlet, online at oilkings.ca, or by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625).
