Chesapeake Baysox News Release
June 13, 2006 - Baysox Drop Series Opener on Tuesday Following a Baysox win in their last outing and starting a series with Portland in the right direction is what Bowie had in mind on Tuesday, but the Baysox would get an omen of how the game would end up just five pitches into the game.
Starter Cory Morris started for the Baysox, his first start for Bowie since September 4, 2005. Unfortunately for Morris and the 5,193 Baysox fans in attendance, Morris took a line drive off the shin after retiring just one batter. He recovered in time to throw out the runner but had to leave the game after just 0.2 IP.
Carlos Jan replaced Morris and pitched quite well for 3.2 innings aside from hanging breaking ball to Alberto Concepcion.
The Baysox scored first on a Noah Hall solo shot to left field for a quick 1-0 lead. Then their bats fell silent.
While Bowie struggled to eke out hits, Portland attacked the Baysox bullpen. Jan gave up a two run double to Concepcion in the 5th and Nick McCurdy surrendered a solo shot to Brandon Moss in the 7th giving Portland a 3-1 lead.
Portland continued their hot hitting well into the 8th frame as they put up four runs on three hits and capitalized on a fielding error all with two outs leading to the Sea Dogs seventh run of the game.
Bowie was able to get two back in the bottom of the 8th thanks to a Rayner Bautista blast over the Subway sign in deep center field, Bautista's fourth home run of the season, and a Cory Keylor RBI double that landed on the chalk down the left field line, scoring Gera Alvarez from first - who had walked.
Despite mounting a slight comeback Portland kept pouring it on in the top of the 9th off Jason Pearson. With one on and two outs the veteran lefthander gave up a two run blast to Chad Spann to blow open the game with a score of 9-3.
Needing six to tie, Bowie put two on to start the bottom of the 9th. After Raúl Chavez went down swinging, Tripper Johnson blooped a single into right field to load the bases for Rayner Bautista - who swung at three straight pitches for a punch out. Portland reliever Devern Hansack then left Tony Alvarez standing witih the bat on his shoulder with the bags full and ending the would-be comeback.
Hall was 3-for-4 on the night while Keylor went 2-for-4 in the loss.
ON DECK: Wednesday and Thursday the Baysox will meet the Sea Dogs again and look to win their first game against the team from Maine. Tomorrow James Johnson will face Luis Mendoza in the fifth match up of the season between the two clubs. Portland has outscored the Baysox 20-10 in the series.
