Defenders a day late and a run short again for 5th straight

June 13, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Defenders have fought the best teams in the Eastern League hard for four straight games, with nothing to show, but four one run losses. Tuesday night was no different as they dropped their fifth straight decision by one run, 3-2 to the Akron Aeros again.

Connecticut fell behind in the top of the first when Ryan Mulhern knocked in Brad Snyder with an RBI double. Chris Begg would work out of further trouble in the 1st, and a jam in the 2nd inning to keep the Defenders close. Connecticut was able to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th when Tyler Von Schell, who's batting average has been a victim of recent bad luck, ripped an RBI double to the wall in left center field. The Aeros regained their lead in the top of the fifth when Mulhern stepped up with another RBI double, this time knocking in two runs to make the score 3-1.

The Aeros had a chance to blow the game open in the top of the seventh. Chris Begg allowed three straight one out singles to load the bases, but Geno Espinelli came in from the bullpen in a tight spot, and allowed no inherited runners to score. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Randy Walter cut the lead in half with his 2nd home run of the season. That made the score 3-2. In the bottom of the 9th, Tyler Von Schell did lead off the inning with a hit, and got to second base on a bunt, but neither Walter or Brian Munhall could deliver the game tying hit as the Defenders took their fifth straight loss.

On Wednesday the Defenders will send righty Garrett Broshuis (2-3) to the hill to hopefully end the skid. Making a spot start in place of Ron "Bear" Bay, who was promoted to AAA Buffalo will be Mariano Gomez, a lefthander recently added to the Aeros pitching staff. It will be his first appearance for Akron in 2006. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
