Pork Roll Fall Short in Back-And-Forth Battle

July 5, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

A game that saw four lead changes saw the Thunder Pork Roll ultimately fall, 7-5, to the Hartford Yard Goats on Friday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.

The loss was the sixth in a row for the Pork Roll (7-11, 45-38), the longest of the season and the team's first losing streak of more than five games since a six-game skid in June 2014.

The game's decisive blow came in the top of the eighth inning, as Pork Roll reliever Trevor Lane (3-1) allowed a leadoff double to Tyler Nevin, who took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Vance Vizcaino single past a drawn-in infield, giving Hartford (8-9, 45-39) a 6-5 lead.

The timely hit negated a two-run seventh that had seen the Pork Roll tie the score at 5-5 as a walk, a single, and a throwing error preceded a game-tying sacrifice fly by Chris Gittens.

Hartford had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Pork Roll starter Brian Keller, getting RBI-singles from Scott Burcham and Carlos Herrera. The Pork Roll fought back to take the lead in the bottom half on a Matt Lipka RBI-single and a go-ahead two-run triple by Hoy Jun Park, but the Yard Goats immediately tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the third and eventually retook the lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Former Thunder right-hander Jordan Foley (3-4) earned the win in relief for Hartford, teaming up with three other Yard Goats relievers to keep the Pork Roll in check from the fifth inning onward.

Park led the Pork Roll with three hits, while Mandy Alvarez went 2-for-4 to extend his on-base streak to 14 games.

Your Thunder continue their homestand on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. against the Yard Goats. RHP Nick Green (1-1, 6.17) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Heath Holder (4-2, 1.47) will go for Hartford. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
